Cultural competency is an emerging, contemporary concept, and a skill set that is imperative to public health practice, as well as many other sectors and professions. Don’t be fooled by the name – it’s not an easily-mastered proficiency, something you can simply learn and store away for later. Rather, it’s an iterative process starting with exploring culture (including our own biases and assumptions!), and developing appropriate awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes to navigate cultural similarities and differences, beliefs and behaviors in our complex, diverse world!
