“Invisible Bike Helmet” Keeps Your Hair Intact and Your Head Safe

I recently found an article about a Swedish invention that looks to minimize the problems surrounding “helmet head”, discomfort, inconvenience, and bulkiness of helmets. Two Swedish students designed what is essentially an airbag for bikes, but just has the appearance of a chic collar. Using battery-powered accelerometers and gyroscopes, the collar detects motions typically involved in bike crashes and triggers a gas inflator that fills an airbag with helium. That airbag forms a hood around your head, protecting you from the impact of a crash. The helmets have not yet been approved in Canada and are very expensive (600 euros each). As the mandatory helmet law in BC has many people wondering if the upcoming bike-share system will be successful, there is potential that innovations may encourage people to bike in the future. Here is a link to a video that show the helmet in action: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/15/swedish-designers-craft-i_n_1784264.html
